Move over Ocasio-Cortez, the left has a new rock star

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez better start working on some new viral dance moves because she's not the only it-female Progressive on the block anymore. The media is starting to fall for Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

Granted, freshman Representative Omar's story is a good one on paper. Born in Somalia, she spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp before immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager. Now she's the first woman to wear a hijab in Congress, which means automatic rock star status in the media.

But if you're an elected official who checks the right boxes, anti-Semitic tweets get a pass.

There is however a slight problem with Omar and her potential anti-Semitism. Just a tiny bit of anti-Semitism. But she's the first hijab-wearing congresswoman in U.S. history so it's okay. Everybody makes mistakes.

Still, one of her old tweets is raising some eyebrows. In 2012, during Israel's bombing of Gaza in retaliation for Hamas rockets being fired into Israel, Omar wrote:

Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.

This week, Omar was asked about the tweet on CNN. Here's what she had to say:

Dem Rep. Omar Defends Invoking Allah To Expose The “Evil Doings" Of The Jewish State Of Israel youtu.be

Maybe you can technically draw a line between criticizing a people and their country's government, as Omar is trying to do. But no other nation on the planet is so tightly associated with its religion and ethnicity as Israel. So, Omar is really tip-toeing around anti-Semitism here.

While Omar was running for office last year, she also affirmed her support of the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel. Despite her anti-Israel stance, yesterday Omar told another CNN show:

I don't know how my comments would be offensive to Jewish Americans.

If you're an elected official who checks the right boxes, anti-Semitic tweets get a pass.

There are definitely double-standard issues at play here. Kevin Hart can't host the Oscars because of old tweets. James Gunn can't direct the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie because of old tweets. As we continue to see, digging through old tweets is one of the best ways to earn your virtue signaling badge. But if you're an elected official who checks the right boxes, anti-Semitic tweets get a pass.

Apparently not all bad tweets are created equal.
