A Michael Jackson Biopic Is In The Works

The World Music Awards - Arrivals

Despite the controversy that's recently tarnished Michael Jackson's legacy, a biopic about the King of Pop's life is in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is being produced by Graham King, who's best known for his Freddie Mercury tribute Bohemian Rhapsody, which raked in $900 million at the worldwide box office. John Logan (The Aviator, Hugo, Skyfall, Spectre) is set to write the screenplay.

As The Hollywood Reporter explains, "the film will cover his entire life and career, which includes his beginnings with The Jackson Five, a rise to pop superstardom and, later in life, legal struggles with both civil and criminal lawsuits stemming from allegations of child sex abuse. Jackson died in 2009 at age 50."

The news comes amidst the Jackson estate filing a lawsuit against Time Warner over the divisive documentary Leaving Neverland, which details alleged child sexual abuse by Jackson. The film won best documentary or nonfiction special at the 2019 Creative Arts Emmys. The late pop star's estate is also working on a Broadway show called MJ The Musical that will focus on "Jackson's career milestones with an emphasis on his achievements throughout his 20s and 30s."

Along with the Jackson movie, King is also currently developing a Bee Gees biopic.
